Bill's New Canadian Adventure
October1,
2008
Jan Hannah works for the International Fund for Animal Welfare
which improves the welfare of wild and domestic animals
throughout the world. Jan, as an Emergency Responder, was
deployed to New Orleans during Hurricane Gustav to help with the
pet pre- and post-evacuation. While in New Orleans, Jan was sent
to the LA/SPCA to help prepare kennels and unload owned dogs at
the LA/SPCA.
Enter Bill, a large terrier mix who was one of the first strays
rescued after Hurricane Gustav by the LA/SPCA's Humane Officers.
For Jan, it was love at first sight. She said Bill looked so sad
in his kennel. She stuck her fingers through the cage and he
leaned in for the touch and looked up with his golden eyes.
That's all it took.
Jan told LA/SPCA staff that if Bill wasn’t claimed she wanted to
adopt him. Since Bill was a stray, the LA/SPCA had to hold him
for five days and because of the confusion due to the hurricane,
we extended the stray period for another five days. No one came
forward to claim Bill.
This was good news to Jan who still wanted Bill as part of her
family. Jan had responded following Katrina, and she adopted a
Katrina dog. She felt that if Bill was not going to find a home
in New Orleans, he deserved a chance with her.
Bill is a big, dominant, and challenging dog. He is also
heartworm positive. Under normal circumstances, he would have
had a hard time being adopted. When Jan found out about his
temperament, she thought maybe she shouldn’t pursue the
adoption, but her original thinking was if he needed a home, she
could give him that, and she couldn't leave him.
Jan returned home to Ontario, Canada. Bill was neutered on
September 22nd at the LA/SPCA, and on Sept. 29th he will be
flying to Canada to join his new family. Jan said she is very
thankful to Loretta Lambert (LA/SPCA staff) and the LA/SPCA for
all their work in facilitating his departure to Canada.
We wish
Bill the best of luck on his new Canadian adventure!
