Tinkerbell and Lacey - it so good to be home!
October1, 2008
For
Hurricane Gustav, Melody Cashion and her 8-year old daughter
Sydney, participated in the City Assisted Evacuation Plan and
evacuated with their two Jack Russells, Tinkerbell and Lacey.
They were accompanying a disabled family friend, whose dog had
also been evacuated, and because they went to a special needs
shelter with her, they were separated from their dogs.
Tinkerbell and Lacey ended up at the LA/SPCA.
Following the evacuation, the family friend returned home and
claimed her pet, but Melody and Sydney decided to remain in
Lewisburg, Tennessee and rebuild their lives there, where they
had contacts in the community.
Because Melody has no vehicle, she was planning on having all
her belongings shipped to her, but unfortunately could not find
a way to claim her dogs or get them shipped. She tried various
shipping agents with no success.
After three weeks, the dogs and the family were desperate to be
reunited. A LA/SPCA volunteer, Lori Woods, agreed to make the
long drive to Lewisburg with a friend and deliver the dogs to
Melody’s new home. They were safely delivered on the afternoon
of September 24.
Here is Lori's recap of the trip,
"We pulled out of New Orleans at about 5am. The ladies (Tink and
Lacey) slept in the backseat on a mound of blankets for the
first 3-4hrs. We pulled over in Alabama for a quick bathroom
break and some water, then immediately got back in the car and
continued heading North to Lewisberg, Tenn.
"We arrived at Tink and Lacey's new home around 12:45 pm. Melody
came out to greet us. The girls slept for most of the trip and
were still half asleep when we pulled up. It took about
2 minutes for them to realize what was going on. Melody came up
to the car and tapped on the window and said "Hello Tink" "Hi
Lacey". It was then that they realized who was speaking to them.
Their tails were wagging so hard that their little bodies were
flailing out of control.
It was so funny!
"They ran inside their new home and began to scope things out.
This gave Melody and I a chance to talk for a minute. She
expressed sincere gratitude to the LA/SPCA and I for making this
reunion possible. The excitement and sheer happiness in their
faces was truly a sight. It was the moment I had been waiting
for since I agreed to bring them home.
"I am happy to report that Tink and Lacey are safe back at home
with their family where they belong. Sydney, Melody's daughter
even made a card with a pic of her and the girls saying 'Thanks
for my Dogs'."
