PRESS RELEASE
Louisiana SPCA Assisting Other Area
Shelters with Their Evacuation
NEW ORLEANS, LA (8/29/08) – The
Louisiana SPCA (LA/SPCA) is
currently assisting St. Bernard and
St. John Parishes with their shelter
evacuations. Both shelters do not
have adequate supplies or
transportation available to move
their animals. LA/SPCA director Ana
Zorrilla reported that the LA/SPCA
is also in communication with and
may assist Jefferson Parish if their
destination shelters fall through.
Animals from the St. John Parish
Animal Shelter are scheduled to
arrive this afternoon at the LA/SPCA
and will then be transported from
New Orleans to the SPCA of Texas in
Dallas. SPCA of Texas personnel
arrived in New Orleans earlier today
to assist with the evacuation and
transport. Additionally, the Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS)
has sent animal transport vehicles
from both D.C. and Florida to be
available for evacuation assistance
on Saturday. Personnel from United
Animal Nations (UAN) are also
arriving later this evening to
assist as well.
The LA/SPCA contacted the SPCA of
Texas Tuesday, activating a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)
between the two shelters that
provides for the evacuation, care
and placement of owner surrendered
animals should a severe hurricane
approach. All stray animals
currently housed at the Louisiana
SPCA will be transferred to other
shelters in Louisiana. No stray
animals will come to the SPCA of
Texas.
The LA/SPCA is also setting up its
own temporary shelter in the Baton
Rouge area for some of its dogs, due
to a shortage of space at the
earlier established destination
shelter at the East Baton Rouge
Parish Animal Control Center. Some
cats and dogs were already safely
evacuated to Baton Rouge on
Thursday, but the LA/SPCA determined
that additional space was needed to
accommodate additional animals.
