Dear Friends,
2007 is here!!
This past year
feels as if it’s
zoomed by and
there remains
much to be done
for our animals
and our
community as we
continue to
rebuild the
Louisiana SPCA.
As we move
forward and
tackle our many
challenges, our
journey is not
without friends
and supporters
like you who
care deeply
about improving
the lives of the
animals we
shelter and care
for daily. A new
year cannot
begin adequately
without thanking
all of you who
helped us make
it through this
past year.
We dedicate this
edition of our
e-newsletter to
the volunteers
of the LA/SPCA.
Our community is
fortunate to
have devoted
individuals who
volunteer their
time to make a
significant
impact in the
lives of others.
Not only does
their work help
animals, but
they also enrich
the lives of
those who are
finding new love
with their
furred
companions.
We wish all of
you a
successful,
happy and
healthy 2007,
and a special
hope for all our
furred friends
that they too
may experience a
life filled with
love, compassion
and
companionship.
Woof,

Laura Maloney,
CEO

Volunteering at
the Louisiana
SPCA:
“I see
animals
given not
only a
chance,
but every
chance
possible.”
If you’re lucky
enough, you may
find yourself in
a place where
you can look
back on a moment
that was not
only an
experience, but
an eye opening,
life- changing
one. Call it
your ah-ha
moment.
For Susie Folkes,
a Louisiana SPCA
volunteer since
November 2005,
her experience
with the LA/SPCA
has been, in her
words, both
“gratifying” and
“wonderful,” and
in just thirteen
months she’s
experienced
quite a few
ah-ha moments
that have
changed her
views
dramatically
about what life
is really like
for animals
cared for at an
animal shelter.
Especially an
open admission
shelter like the
LA/SPCA where no
animal is ever
turned away; and
which, in turn,
translates into
hundreds of
animals always
in need of homes
at any one time.
When Susie meets
someone who
learns that
she’s a
volunteer she is
often greeted
with sympathy of
how difficult it
must be to
volunteer for an
organization
like the LA/SPCA.
Before she
signed on as a
volunteer, Susie
explained, “Even
I didn’t think
they [the LA/SPCA]
kept animals as
long as they do.
Now I see that
animals are
given not only a
chance but every
chance possible,
for as long as
possible. That
was one thing
that surprised
me and now I try
to educate the
public.”

One familiar
face
When the LA/SPCA
staff arrives at
work every
morning, we say
hello to a cadre
of diverse co-
workers that
become for many
of us our
“second family.”
We also have the
added benefit of
having a large
extended family
made up of
wonderful
animals and
generous
individuals who
make up our
volunteer force.
One familiar
face of our
extended family
that we say
hello to most
mornings is Mary
Pollard. Mary
began
volunteering
with the LA/SPCA
in April 2006.
Quiet and
soft-spoken,
you’ll find Mary
walking dogs and
socializing them
in one of the
many
socialization
yards that dot
our temporary
facility. Mary,
like all of our
volunteers,
provides
invaluable
companionship to
shelter animals
and plays an
integral role in
helping them
find forever
homes. The staff
looks at all our
volunteers with
awe and
admiration for
their selfless
giving. When you
ask Mary what
drew her here,
she says simply,
“It brightens my
day.” If our
animals could
speak, we’re
sure they would
say the same.

MySpace.com
Volunteer
Driven
There are so
many aspects of
the Louisiana
SPCA that rely
on volunteers to
make them
happen. One such
venture is
MySpace.com. In
late December we
built a page on
this popular
site and quickly
ran into the
problem of not
having enough
time to make
friends. A
volunteer
request quickly
produced several
volunteers who
are familiar
with the site
and were willing
to help us out.
In the future we
have plans to
build the blog
and make
MySpace.com/laspca
a source of
educational
information and
up-to-date
happenings on
the progress of
our rebuilding
efforts and our
animals. Kudos
to the wonderful
volunteers of
the Louisiana
SPCA! They are
our future.

Animal
Transports
LIVING THE
GOOD LIFE --
MAINE
STYLE!!
Over the past
year, the
Louisiana SPCA
has given our
animals a
“second chance”
at finding
forever homes
with our
Caravans of
Love. These
caravans have
actually been
managed
transports where
some of our
adoptable
animals are
transported to
shelters such as
the Houston SPCA,
SPCA of Texas
and the Humane
Society of Knox
County in Maine.
Almost 40
animals have
thus far gone to
Maine and all
have found
wonderful homes
there. As we
often like to
say, before they
even have a
chance to unpack
their bags, our
wonderful
adoptable dogs
are picking up
their suitcases
and running into
the arms of
loving owners
and forever
homes.
One of our
Maine successes
is Hazel. Hazel
was at the LA/SPCA
shelter from
February 2006
through August
2006. Today
Hazel is living
the good life in
Maine with her
human
companions,
Pamela Nieroda
and James
Giroux.
