Major Gift from Joe W. and Dorothy
Dorsett Brown Foundation
To Name New
Louisiana SPCA Campus
NEW ORLEANS, LA
– (4/16/07) The Louisiana Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (LA/SPCA) announced today a
major milestone in the
organization’s history with the
awarding of a $2 million gift from
the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown
Foundation in New Orleans, a long
time supporter of the non-profit.
The Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown
Foundation has been the largest
single donor and supporter of the
LA/SPCA throughout the history of
the organization. In fact, it was
through the direct work of Mrs.
Brown that resulted in the building
of the former Japonica Street
shelter, which was destroyed during
Hurricane Katrina. Over the years,
the Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown
Foundation has sustained the LA/SPCA
during some of its most difficult
times and made several large gifts.
The Foundation’s gift was made to
the LA/SPCA in memory of Dorothy
Dorsett Brown, who devoted her
life’s work to the plight of all
companion animals. Due to the
Foundation’s support of the LA/SPCA
over these many years, the LA/SPCA’s
new campus will be named the
“Dorothy Dorsett Brown Louisiana SPCA
Campus.”
“We know that Mrs. Brown would be
thrilled to see what she started
many years ago on Japonica Street
and how the organization has grown,
and even excelled, amidst the
challenges presented by Katrina,”
said Laura Maloney, LA/SPCA’s CEO.
“We’re deeply honored to have our
campus named in honor of such a
wonderful person who cared so deeply
for all animals.”
"Having this wonderful new facility
named for Mrs. Brown is awesome,"
said Paul Spencer, president of the
Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown
Foundation. "Knowing that this new
state-of-the-art complete shelter
will be able to continue giving the
love, care and concern she had for
all animals is so satisfying. She
would hope that everyone, and
especially all pet lovers, recognize
and remember that this milestone for
LA/SPCA is possible mainly thru the
hard work, efforts and dedication of
the staff, board and volunteers of
this wonderful organization."
Susan Hess and Cleland Powell,
co-chairs of the capital campaign
efforts expressed the gratitude of
the entire capital campaign
committee and hailed the gift as a
“tremendous contribution in
realizing the goal to rebuild the
Louisiana SPCA. It’s a tremendous
step forward for the community and
the animals.”
Maloney said the Grand Opening
Ceremony for the LA/SPCA Campus,
which will be held May 18, 2007, at
their new home, 1700 Mardi Gras
Boulevard, will officially unveil
and introduce the new 10.7 acre
campus. The campus will consist of
three phases: Phase I – Animal
Rescue & Care Center; Phase II -
Adoption, Education & Veterinary
Care Center and Boutique; and Phase
III – Urban Revitalization and
Community Outreach that will include
such components as a Doggie Day
Care/Boarding Facility and an
agility center for dogs.
The capital campaign goal to
complete all phases is $17 million.
The Joe W. and Dorothy Dorsett Brown
Foundation gift brings the total
pledges and gifts to this campaign
to $8.2 million.
