LOUISIANA SPCA IMPOUNDS FOUR DOGS
FROM NINTH WARD
AS PART OF A DOG FIGHTING
INVESTIGATION
NEW
ORLEANS, LA (July 4, 2007) - The
Louisiana Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA)
rescued four dogs from a Ninth Ward
home after the Louisiana National
Guard responded to a call to
investigate dog fighting on Tuesday,
July 3rd.
According to LA/SPCA Director of
Humane Law Enforcement, Kathryn
Destreza, the police received a
complaint that kids were holding dog
fights in the backyard of a Desire
Street residence. When Destreza
arrived on the scene three of the
dogs were on heavy chains and all of
the animals were in poor health and
in need of food and water. The
remains of a chicken were also found
on the property. A teenage son and
his mother are facing charges by the
N.O.P.D. The son is charged with
cruelty to animals and dog fighting,
the mother is charged with allowing
dog fighting on the property.
“This is a violent crime. The most
disturbing element of this case is
that it involves juveniles. If they
are being cruel to animals now, it
will only lead to more serious
crimes in the future,” Destreza
said. “This has to stop and we need
the community’s eyes and ears. The
public is our first line of defense.
Last night some one cared enough to
call the police. Because of that we
were able to rescue the dogs and the
family was charged.” The dogs are
now in the care of the LA/SPCA.
