LA/SPCA CALLED IN ON TWO DOGFIGHTING CASES:
ARRESTS MADE AND DOGS RESCUED

NEW ORLEANS, LA (July 19, 2007) – Due to their expertise in dogfighting investigations and identifying dogfighting evidence, the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (LA/SPCA) has, within the last six days, been called in to assist law enforcement officials handling two separate dog fighting cases that resulted in the arrest of six individuals and the rescue of nine dogs and six puppies.

The LA/SPCA joined a Louisiana State Police investigation Friday night in Greensburg, La where two dogs were rescued from a makeshift fighting enclosure, or pit. Four individuals were arrested and charged with dogfighting in the incident. According to Kathryn Destreza, LA/SPCA’s Director of Humane Law Enforcement, the dogs, which were both American Bull terrier mixes, were badly cut and both were bleeding from fresh wounds.

In a separate case, the LA/SPCA joined the State Police on a dogfighting investigation in Independence, La. State Police officials were conducting a search, seizure and arrest warrant against Michael Beavers of Independence. Beavers was not at his property during the search and seizure, but thirteen dogs were rescued from his property. A total of seven adult dogs and six puppies, were taken off the property, including one
adult dog that had been left in the woods with no food and water. All of the dogs had flea allergies and skin conditions and all of the adult dogs were tethered on thick, heavy chains.

Destreza pointed out how these cases illustrate the widespread problem of dogfighting. “It’s not just in city likes New Orleans but anywhere. That’s why it’s so important that all law enforcement agencies work together by sharing information.” Destreza also stressed that these cases cross socioeconomic lines. “Dogfighting is a crime that can occur in all walks of life and should be treated like any other type of violent crime. We want to remove the feeling that, it’s just an animal and show the seriousness of the crime.”

To report suspected dog fighting or any other types of animal cruelty to the LA/SPCA please call 504-368-5191, ext. 100. Reports can also be reported online at Complaint or Request for Investigation
