Louisiana SPCA
Setting Humane Traps
In Areas Scheduled for Demolition
NEW ORLEANS
(03/05/06) – The Louisiana SPCA will
conduct sweeps beginning today for
animals in the areas where
flood-damaged homes are scheduled
for demolition and property removal.
The city announced plans yesterday
to begin the removal work on Monday.
The LA/SPCA will set humane traps
today and conduct sweeps to make
sure stray animals are not using the
damaged homes in those areas as
shelter. The traps will initially be
set in the lower Ninth Ward and in
Lakeview, where two properties are
scheduled for teardown as early as
Monday morning.
“As future demolition work is
scheduled, the LA/SPCA will
coordinate with city and federal
officials to ensure that no animals
are harmed during the removal work,”
said Laura Maloney, LA/SPCA’s
Executive Director.
LA/SPCA’s humane trapping campaign
has been on-going for months,
including an intensive campaign in
January in targeted areas. .The
agency will focus on some of those
same areas again prior to future
demolitions. The LA/SPCA continues
to rescue animals everyday from city
streets and neglected homes. The
agency is also loaning traps to
residents and training them on their
use. Interested residents may visit
the shelter at 701 Thayer Street in
Algiers to obtain a trap in exchange
for a deposit that will be held
until the trap is returned.
