Camps

The Louisiana SPCA offers several different types of camps throughout the year for various age groups. Our camps are designed to teach youth the importance of proper pet ownership and to instill compassion for our furry friends. Our camps fill up very quickly so we encourage you to register early!

Animal Investigators Camp - 4th & 5th grade (summer)

Camp Luv-A-Pet - 2nd & 3rd grade (summer)

Animal Celebration Winter Camp - 7 - 10 year olds (winter)

Kids 'n' Critters Day Camp (winter)

Care Cadet Training Camp - 6th & 7th Grade

This camp is designed to teach young people in 6th and 7th grade how to be humane educators to their peers. After attending this camp, many Care Cadet Alumni continue interacting with the shelter as volunteers.

  • Each day is filled with presentations from shelter department managers, veterinarians, exotic pet experts, a therapy dog handler and a service dog trainer; just to name a few.

  • Field trips include a trip to horse stables, where the kids muck stalls and learn about caring for large animals and to the Southeast Veterinary Specialists, a state of the art hospital with they will learn about animal rehabilitation and specialty care.

  • The Cadets are tested weekly (don't worry, they'll love our tests!) on their new knowledge.

  • Working in teams, the Cadets are assigned a shelter dog/cat to train. Under the guidance of a professional trainer, they turn these cute and cuddly balls of energy into well-behaved, very adoptable canine/feline companions.

Cost: $450 for 3-week camp

Camp dates: June 8-26, 2015, Monday-Friday, 9 am-3 pm

Application deadline: March 20, 2015

How to apply: All camp applicants must complete an application that includes a questionnaire, essay and requires two recommendations - one from a teacher and one from a friend. The applicants will then be asked to come to the shelter for an interview and tour.
