Summer Camps:

Care Cadet Training Camp - 6th & 7th Grade

Care Cadet Camp is for children entering 6th or 7th grade. The program is designed to teach young people how to be humane educators to their peers. Each day is filled with presentations from shelter department managers, veterinarians, exotic pet experts, a therapy dog handler, and a service dog trainer; just to name a few. Field trips include a trip to horse stables, where the kids muck stalls and learn about caring for large animals, and Southeast Veterinary Specialists, a state of the art hospital with they will learn about animal rehabilitation and specialty care.  The Cadets are tested weekly on their new knowledge. Working in teams, the Cadets are assigned a shelter dog/cat to train. Under the guidance of a professional trainer, they turn these cute and cuddly balls of energy into well-behaved, very adoptable canine/feline companions. Many Care Cadet Alumni continue interacting with the shelter as volunteers.

The 3-week camp will be offered once over the summer in  2014.  All camp applicants must complete a questionnaire, write an essay, and receive two recommendations - one from a teacher and one from a friend. The applicants will then be asked to come to the shelter for an interview and tour.
