Given that the inflow of unwanted animals far exceeds available homes for those animals - what is the most humane way of dealing with surplus animals? Are shelters working towards ending euthanasia? Do shelters that advertise they don't kill animals lead the public to believe there is no overpopulation problem? When open-admission offer to shelter all animals in need and euthanize healthy, unadopted animals, are they perpetuating the notion that animals are disposable? When limited-admission shelters take in easy-to-adopt animals and turn away hard-to-adopt animals, are they making a similar value judgment?
Although animal protection organizations don’t fit neatly into two separate limited-admission and open-admission camps, one issue in particular draws a distinct line: Is euthanasia the most responsible and humane way to deal with the current population of unadopted animals?
