Kill vs. No-Kill Shelters, part 3


Some of the issues under debate are:

  • Given that the inflow of unwanted animals far exceeds available homes for those animals - what is the most humane way of dealing with surplus animals?

  • Are shelters working towards ending euthanasia?

  • Do shelters that advertise they don't kill animals lead the public to believe there is no overpopulation problem?

  • When open-admission offer to shelter all animals in need and euthanize healthy, unadopted animals, are they perpetuating the notion that animals are disposable?

  • When limited-admission shelters take in easy-to-adopt animals and turn away hard-to-adopt animals, are they making a similar value judgment?

Although animal protection organizations don’t fit neatly into two separate limited-admission and open-admission camps, one issue in particular draws a distinct line: Is euthanasia the most responsible and humane way to deal with the current population of unadopted animals? And if not, what are the alternatives?
