Love of
animals opened new doors
April 12, 2007
Our companion animals have a way of bringing people into our lives. Out
for a morning walk with our dog, we feel an immediate connection to the
neighbor we see every day doing the same activity, without even knowing
one another's name.
Standing in the checkout line and noticing someone with cat hairs
covering her sweater, you smile because you realize she love cats as
much as you do.
It's that love and appreciation for companion animals that opened the
door to my volunteering, and ultimately working, for the Louisiana SPCA.
That connection allowed me the joy and pleasure of getting to know and
work with Laura Maloney. She is an amazing mentor and a treasured
friend.
So it is with mixed emotions that I pick up the torch to continue this
column. Since its inception in April 2003, Laura has shared her
thoughts, commentary and advice on all things animal-related, and in the
process she's won our admiration and our hearts. Thankfully, her new
life in Australia is still months away. It's comforting to know that her
indelible stamp on the LA/SPCA, and the community as a whole, leaves us
with a firm foundation and a solid future.
Tail Talk will continue to share helpful information and celebrate the
remarkable power of the human/animal bond. Whether we have opened our
homes and hearts to a persnickety calico cat, a gentle pit bull, an
anxious Great Dane or a cuddly ferret, we form a connection because of
the union, relationship and experiences we share with our furred
friends.
I'm excited to enter a new "neighborhood" of readers and look forward to
keeping the window open on the wonderfully-nuanced world that our
companion animals introduce us to every day. I hope you continue to turn
to Tail Talk and send in questions and comments as we share in all
things animal-related.
I can think of no better way to say hello to new friends than through
our unabashed love for our four-legged friends.
