Shelter animals will move to
new home
May 3, 2007
Maybe it was the moment you walked into your favorite restaurant after
it reopened that you realized we are rebuilding not only a place, but a
community.
For me, it was the moment I witnessed my two dogs and three cats gallop,
climb, run, purr and bark in a spacious five-room shotgun after we'd
endured living in a trailer with two other humans for almost a year.
It was wonderful to see them running free and at peace once again.
Soon we'll get to witness another joyful moment when many dogs and cats
in our community move out of their temporary shelter and into the new,
spacious and colorful permanent home of the Louisiana SPCA Animal Rescue
and Care Center (ARCC), which opens on May 18 at 1700 Mardi Gras Blvd.
in Algiers.
Since Oct. 15, 2005, the LA/SPCA has cared for hundreds of animals at a
temporary, MASH-like facility. Inside the new state-of-the-art center
there are glass-enclosed rooms for cats and kittens, attractive puppy
and small animal rooms and well-ventilated kennels throughout.
It's the perfect setting for animals to live in while waiting to find
permanent, loving homes.
There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m., followed by an open
house, shelter tours and an art viewing and contest.
Weekend activities are planned for May 19-20, including face-paintings,
games and reading times with puppies and kittens.
For our wonderful, blessed four-legged creatures that have endured so
much, there's exhilaration in realizing that there truly is no better
place than a new home. And though the center is a wonderful place, the
LA/SPCA works hard to make adoptions come true every day.
