Katrina Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if my animal was at Lamar?
All Lamar-Dixon animals are listed on PetHarbor.com. You can also visit disaster.petfinder.com to look for your pet. If you find him or her, there’s a link for you to email your information. Someone will contact you with your pet’s location. Once located, the humane societies will pay for your pet’s ride home. You can also call 1.800.humane1.

What happens to the animals you’re rescuing?
The animals are being taken to a temporary holding facility in Gonzales, LA, [now closed] where they are examined by a veterinarian, bathed, fed, and housed. Photos are taken and uploaded into PetHarbor.com and disaster.petfinder.com where it’s our hope that owners will find their beloved companions. Once found, the humane agencies will arrange for your pet to be transported to you for a tear-filled reunion!

How do I adopt an animal?
In an effort to reunite as many people and animals as possible, owners will have until October 15th to claim their pet. If the animal is not claimed, it will go up for adoption in the city where it’s being sheltered. Interested adopters can also search petfinder.com or www.vetmed.lsu.edu to find their perfect Hurricane Katrina survivor. .

How can I foster an animal?
Due to the sheer magnitude of the disaster and the number of animals coming into our care, several large humane societies and SPCA’s have offered to serve as a host facility, which will manage the animals and arrange for foster care. If you’re interested in fostering, please call your local humane society or SPCA to see if they are accepting any of the Hurricane Katrina survivors. If so, inquire about fostering opportunities.

Will the animals be euthanized?

The only animals euthanized are those that are in very poor condition as determined by veterinarians. Animals are being sent to shelters throughout the country in hopes of finding the perfect home.

How can I volunteer?

At the current time, we are seeking skilled volunteers and professional animal care staff. Local volunteers are walking the dogs, cuddling with the cats and providing lots of love. Please apply for volunteering by filling out the online application.

Where can I mail in a donation to help?
You can mail in a check or money order to:
Louisiana SPCA
P.O. Box 127
Mandeville, Louisiana 70470

I can’t help with money, BUT I WANT TO HELP! Where can I mail items I have collected?
Unfortunately, until we are more stable, we will not be able to receive any items, other than those we have specifically requested. Our shelter was damaged in the hurricane; all space is at a commodity at this time. What space we have, we are using to house the rescued animals. Although we have a great need to replace everything; cat and dog toys used for the Quality-of-Life program, Kennel supplies, storage containers for foods, computers, server, software, office furniture, and so much more, we are not in a position to accept items at this time. However, we are hoping that will be remedied soon. Please direct any questions concerning material donations to Info@la-spca.org.

I sent a donation to you and it hasn’t been posted to my credit card. Did you get it?
If the donation came through our Web site, yes we have received it. We have many donations that were given prior to 9/5, before a PayPal link was added to our Web site. Pre-PayPal, we processed all donations through our merchant account. When our shelter became submerged in water, we lost our merchant account equipment. It has been difficult to gain access to the account. Area banks are on heightened security. This has been rectified and we will begin processing those much needed donations as soon as the terminal arrives.
UP-DATE: We started processing the much needed funds September 22nd. It is a slow process and it will take 4 to 6 weeks to complete. Thank you for your support and your patience!

Did Snowball ever get reunited with his Boy?
There are many rumors as to Snowball’s fate, as well as the many other animals featured in the media. To date, 9/13/05, all rumors are unsubstantiated. The truth is, for every Snowball there are hundreds of other animals and boys in the same situation. For every black lab, there are many others looking just as lost and bewildered. Maybe after everything is said and done, we will be able to look back and see the fate of some of the animals that have become the faces of the Katrina animal victims. Maybe, many of those stories will have a happy ending.

I saw on CNN that you were only saving the animals on your list. Is that true?
Animals on the rescue list at times do have priority, although, these are far from the only ones being rescued and housed at the temporary shelter. The people who have called in making a specific request to rescue their pet will be prepared to come and get their animal. This will free up much needed space and resources to save more. Due to the circumstances, many of the pets locked in homes have a very limited supply of food and water. They also have owners willing to remove them as soon as possible. All the animals need saved. We are doing what is necessary to save as many as possible.

What is your Tax ID #
