Shelter FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How many animals does the Louisiana SPCA take in each year?

We take in between 4,000-5,000 on average each year. The animals found as strays, surrendered by their owners or rescued by our Humane Law & Rescue team.

What types of animals does the Louisiana SPCA have?

We are an open admission shelter and accept almost every type of animal! While we primarily have cats and dogs we often have rabbits, horses, guinea pigs, birds, goats and reptiles. If we ever receive an animal we aren’t able to properly care for we work with partners across the state and transfer the animal to their care.

Is the Louisiana SPCA part of the ASPCA?

No. We are an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit and rely on local donations. The ASPCA is a national organization but physically located in New York. While their work sometimes benefits other organizations they are not affiliated with any other SPCA in the country.

Is the Louisiana SPCA in charge of other SPCA’s in the state?

No. We are not a governing body or parent organization for other SPCA’s.

Where do my donations go?

100% of your donations stay local and go towards our mission to promote, protect and advance the well-being of Louisiana’s companion animals. We are rated a 4-star nonprofit by Charity Navigator and a Platinum Star nonprofit by Guidestar.

Is the Louisiana SPCA no-kill?

As Louisiana’s oldest and largest animal shelter, we continue to grow, evolve and implement new life-saving programs every year. To be a no-kill shelter you must have at least a 90% live release rate. Currently, our live release rate is 88%. With our goal of placing 100% of adoptable animals into loving homes we are confident we will reach no-kill status soon!

Do animals have a time limit to be adopted?

We do not put a time limit on how long an animal has to be adopted. We’ve often had animals celebrate a 1-year shelter anniversary with us before we were able to find them a human to adopt!

In Louisiana, our pets are a part of our culture as much as anything else. And for more than 130 years, the Louisiana SPCA has been an advocate for all our furry friends across the state. Follow our Lead and show the characters of Louisiana you care by supporting the Louisiana SPCA.

The Louisiana SPCA helped more than 3,000 animals find their forever home in 2020.
