Sassy Elizabeth Pear

I lost my "Sassy" in October of 2001 to breast cancer and congestive heart failure. We called her a "toodle" breed because her mother was a pure bred poodle and her father was let's say a "traveling" salesman. Apparently, her mom was quite the lady of the neighborhood! She turned out very beautiful (whatever her DNA was) and our family had her for over 13 years. She was the only other female in my all male household besides me. Some days it was like a frat house in our home so this was comforting to me. She developed breast cancer and many tumors on her belly so we opted for surgery, just for hope. Unfortunately, they grew back in full force in one month. I am a hospice nurse and I just wanted her to die at home with me by her side. I begged her to go but she kept holding on for some reason. I made the decision to take her back to the vet and have her put to rest. My mother, also a nurse, was compassionately by my side. It was peaceful and the right thing to do.

I brought her home so we could bury her in our yard. I'll never forget how hard the ground was and how long my husband was digging in the dark for her. As strange as this sounds, this was a very loving gesture from him to me as he knew how much I loved her. I'll always be grateful for his kindness and for my mother's. He never complained at all about this difficult chore. He understood what I was going through.

I miss you Sassy!!!
