Dog Obedience Training
Join our fun 6 week course and learn how you can teach your dog basic obedience commands. A large percentage of dogs end up at shelters because of the owners inability to communicate appropriate and inappropriate behavior to the dog. Learning is an exciting adventure, for both owner and dog!

Volunteer Program
Our shelter depends heavily on its volunteers to move forward with its mission. Many of the programs and services we provide are volunteer-driven.

Spay and Neuter Program
One of the biggest deterrents to having dogs and cats spayed or neutered is cost. With the use of The Dorothy Dorsett Brown Mobile Center, cost is no longer an issue. See if you qualify and make an appointment TODAY!

The Feral Cat Program
A non-lethal approach to controlling the feral cat population
No matter how aggressive, animal control laws will never solve the feral cat problem. As quickly as feral cats are removed, other cats, or other species, will fill the territory the removed cats have left behind. Nationwide, the best solution to managing feral cat issues is a program known as Trap, Neuter, Return, or TNR. This program relies on concerned citizens or colony caretakers to humanely trap feral cats, sterilize them through spaying or neutering, vaccinate for rabies, and ear tip them to identify those altered.

Adoptions
Adoptions are a major focus of our organization. Our adoption process is designed to form lasting bonds by matching the expectations of a potential pet guardian to a shelter dog based on his or her temperament and behavior. The goal is to lay a strong foundation for the human-canine bond to develop, increasing the potential for a successful, permanent placement.
Our joy lies in the animals we have rehomed.

Humane Education

Show & Tail
An educational program serving K - 12th grade classes. We have trained volunteers eager to present humane education programs with a view towards creating empathy for all living creatures.

Camp Luv-A-Pet
Developed for children entering 2nd or 3rd grade, is a new summer camp first made available August 2008. The program is designed to teach young people about the LA/SPCA and general animal care topics. They are introduced to services the shelter offers, safety with animals, pet handling and care, grooming skills, and responsible pet ownership.

Care Cadet Camp
Care Cadet Camp, developed for children entering 6th or 7th grade, fills the shelter with happy voices for three weeks each June. The program is designed to teach young people how to be humane educators to their peers.

Animal Control
Animal control is one of our most taxing responsibilities. Here we witness many tragic situations, but also reap some of our greatest rewards.

Services provided by Animal Control to the City of New Orleans:

• Bite case and aggressive animal management - a person or animal
  is bitten and/or attacked

• Rabies quarantine and control

• Cruelty and neglect investigations; respond to calls from residents

• Stray and unlicensed animal collection via trapping and or “sweeps” of neighborhood

• Response to calls about animals in distress 24/7 (e.g. animals hit by cars, trapped)

• Support to NOPD, EMS, NOFD and other city agencies

• Enforcement of city animal ordinances

• Revision of ordinances that address animal issues

• Disaster response; Homeland Security’s lead agency for animals in disaster issues

• Animal education, information and referral

• Adoption of animals into new homes

• Sheltering of homeless, bite, dangerous, and cruelty case animals
