Adopt Today

Saving just one animal won't change the world, but surely it will change the world for that one animal.

Adoption Procedures

Adoption Hours

Monday - Sunday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

How It Works

Step 1: Sign in at the adoption desk, then view our adoptables.

Step 2: If you'd like to interact with an animal, please ask an adoption counselor or volunteer.

Step 3: Once you've found a pet that you'd like to adopt, you will need to see an adoption counselor for a short questionnaire. Get a head start on the adoption process!  You can fill out an adoption application online before you head to the shelter by clicking here. Please note, completing this application does not hold any particular animal.

Step 4: You will meet with an adoption counselor in the order that completed applications are received. The counselor will discuss important animal related information with you.

Step 5: If it’s a good fit, you can take your new pet home that day. If you're still unsure, consider the Sleepover Program.

Step 6: An "adopted" sign will be placed on the condo while the adoption paperwork is processed.

What You Need To Know

Please note that all guidelines are in place to ensure adoptable animals are going to the best possible home and that adopters are being matched with the perfect pet. Depending on wait times, the adoption process could take several hours. Read through our guide on what to do before you adopt so you can come prepared!

  • Adoptions are first come, first served.

  • All animals must be spayed/neutered before they can be adopted.

  • If you have another animal at home or young children, we may require a meet-and-greet depending on the animal you are interested in adoptingWe highly recommend meet-and-greets for families with children under the age of 6.

  • Louisiana SPCA's New Orleans Humane Law & Rescue will conduct a post-adoption facility check for certain breeds if you reside in Orleans Parish. Breeds include, but are not limited to, Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Akita and Husky.

  • Cats cannot be de-clawed following adoption. You will sign an adoption contract committing to this requirement.

  • Adoption of dogs for the purpose of having a "guard dog" is not permitted.

  • Adopters from other states are welcome to adopt, but transportation must be secured and arranged by the adopter.

Please note that the Louisiana SPCA reserves the right to restrict or deny adoptions. New Orleans Humane Law & Rescue Representatives and Adoptions Counselors reserve the right to deny an adoption if they feel it is not in the animal's best interest, or if it is not an ideal match between adopter and adoptee.

Why are there Adoption Fees?

All of the animals available for adoption at the Louisiana SPCA have been cared for in our shelter. Animals receive a medical evaluation and behavior testing to ensure they are adoption candidates before they reach the adoption floor. There are many costs associated with caring for these animals before they make their adoption debut.

Adoption fees include the following, valued at more than $400 per animal:

  • Spay/Neuter Surgery

  • Vaccinations

  • Microchip and registration

  • Heartworm test

  • Free trial of pet insurance

  • Small bag of food

  • Heartworm treatment for dogs that are positive at the time of adoption

There are many other costs associated with caring for homeless animals prior to their adoption. If you would like to help us care for homeless animals, you can make a donation here.

  • Senior Citizen Discount: Reduced adoption fee of $50 for animals 5 years and up for senior citizens over the age of 65
