How It Works

Step 1: Sign in at the adoption desk, then view our adoptables.

Step 2: If you'd like to interact with an animal, please ask an adoption counselor or volunteer.

Step 3: Once you've found a pet that you'd like to adopt, you will need to see an adoption counselor for a short questionnaire. Get a head start on the adoption process!  Download and complete the application.  Please bring the completed questionnaire with you to the shelter.  Please note, completing this application does not hold any particular animal.

Step 4: You will meet with an adoption counselor in the order that completed applications are received. The counselor will discuss important animal related information with you.

Step 5: If it’s a good fit, you can take your new pet home that day. If you're still unsure, consider the Sleepover Program.

Step 6: An "adopted" sign will be placed on the condo while the adoption paperwork is processed.

What You Need To Know

Please note that all guidelines are in place to ensure adoptable animals are going to the best possible home and that adopters are being matched with the perfect pet. Depending on wait times, the adoption process could take several hours.

  • Adoptions are first come, first served.

  • All animals must be spayed/neutered before they can be adopted.

  • If you have another animal at home or young children, we might require a meet-and-greet depending on the animal you are interested in adopting. However, we do recommend meet-and-greets for families with children under the age of 6.

  • Louisiana SPCA's New Orleans Humane Law & Rescue will conduct a post adoption facility check for certain breeds if you reside in Orleans Parish. Breeds include, but are not limited to, Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Akita and Husky.

  • Cats cannot be de-clawed following adoption.

  • Adoption of “guard dogs” are not permitted.

  • Adopters from other states are welcome but transportation must be secured and arranged by the adopter.

Please note that the Louisiana SPCA reserves the right to restrict adoptions based on, but not limited to, age of household members, single pet household and past pets. Client Care Counselors reserve the right to deny an adoption if they feel it is not in the animal's best interest or an ideal match for the adopter.
