Adopt Today

Saving just one animal won't change the world, but surely it will change the world for that one animal.

Adoption Procedures

Adoption Hours

Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Sunday: 12 - 4 p.m.

Procedures

Step 1: Sign in at the adoption desk, then view our adoptables.

Step 2: If you'd like to interact with an animal, please ask an adoption counselor or volunteer.

Step 3: Once you've found a pet that you'd like to adopt, you will need to see an adoption counselor for a short questionnaire. Get a head start on the adoption process!  Download and complete the application.  Please bring the completed questionnaire with you to the shelter.  Please note, completing this application does not hold any particular animal.

Step 4: You will meet with an adoption counselor in the order that completed applications are received. The counselor will discuss important animal related information with you.

Step 5: If it’s a good fit, you can take your new pet home that day. If you're still unsure, consider the Sleepover Program or Breed Request.

Step 6: An "adopted" sign will be placed on the condo while the adoption paperwork is processed.

Adoption Guidelines

Please note that all guidelines are in place to ensure adoptable animals are going to the best possible home and that adopters are being matched with the perfect pet. Depending on wait times, the adoption process could take several hours.

  • Adoptions are first come, first served.

  • All animals must be spayed/neutered before they can be adopted.

  • If you have another animal at home or young children, we might require a meet-and-greet depending on the animal you are interested in adopting. However, we do recommend meet-and-greets for families with children under the age of 6.

  • Louisiana SPCA Humane Law Enforcement will conduct a post adoption facility check for certain breeds if you reside in Orleans Parish. Breeds include, but are not limited to, Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Akita and Husky.

  • Out of state adoptions are permitted on a case-by-case basis.

  • Cats cannot be de-clawed following adoption

  • Adoption of “guard dogs” are not permitted.

Please note that the Louisiana SPCA reserves the right to restrict adoptions based on, but not limited to, age of household members, single pet household and past pets. Client Care Counselors reserve the right to deny an adoption if they feel it is not in the animal's best interest or an ideal match for the adopter.

I'm The One

At the Louisiana SPCA our adoption team strives to find the perfect pet for you! The goal of our “I’m the One” adoption process is to match a furry friend to the best possible home for everyone involved – dogs and humans! After filling out a simple questionnaire, the adoption team will chat with you about your lifestyle and which dog would be best fit for you. This is determined by a simple color coding system explained below:

  • Purple: Dogs assigned to the color purple are gentle, snuggle bugs that love a calm household. They may not be very fond of children and may need some time to come out of their shell. Napping by your feet or curled up in your lap is the best place they can be.

  • Orange: Dogs in the orange category tend to be easy going, curious and have an average activity level. Take them on a walk and set aside some playtime and you’ve made their day!

  • Green: Life of the party perfectly describes dogs in the green category. They will need extra exercise and are always ready for that extra walk/run! They’ve got tons of energy and think everything is geared toward playtime.

After a color is assigned, the adoption team is willing to discuss a possible change in color if the adopter is not satisfied but please note that our team reserves the right to deny this request, if necessary, for the best interest of the adopting family and the animal.

Adoption Fees

  • Dogs under 6 months or less than 20 pounds: $150

  • Dogs over 6 months that are more than 20 pounds: $80

  • Cats: $80 ($40 if adopting more than 1 cat in the same day)

  • Small pets:  $10

  • Occasionally other species will be available for adoption and the prices will vary

The Louisiana SPCA is proud to offer free adoptions for all U.S. active and retired military. The Louisiana SPCA and VetsAdoptPets.org will cover the cost of up to 5 adoptions per month for this program.
