Care Cadet Camp is an educational program designed to develop responsible pet owners and human educators. Care Cadets are children who have a sincere interest in all animals, especially companion animals. They share an eagerness to learn more about animal care and the function of the LA/SPCA in our community. Applicants must have completed the fifth grade and will enter the sixth or seventh grade in the fall of 2019. Acceptance into the program is based on an application and interview process.

Campers will cover topics including proper care and handling of pets, pet diseases, overpopulation, the importance of spaying and neutering, animal behavior and training, responsible pet ownership, and much more. Working in pairs, the campers will be assigned a shelter dog/cat to obedience train during the three-week camp.

Campers are tested weekly on all of the materials presented to ensure that our Care Cadets are well-trained volunteers.Graduates of the program assist at the shelter and with special events following the completion of their training. As the Cadets enter junior high school and high school, they may volunteer at the shelter to fulfill their community service requirements.
