Adoption

Client Care: Assist visitors as they look for a new companion. Explain the policies and procedures of adoption to potential adopters and assist them with necessary paperwork.

Off-site adoptions: Assist with bathing and transporting adoptable animals. Set-up and breakdown at off-site location. Talk with prospective adopters while they choose a new companion, helping them find a pet that fits their lifestyle. Explain the policies and procedures of adopting and have them fill out all necessary paperwork, including the adoption contract. Collect adoption fees. Off-site events are 100% volunteer driven.

Animal Care

Work directly with the animals at the shelter. Exercising and socializing the animals is very important to their mental health. Companion animals suffer without companionship. Due to the volume of animals our staff has precious few minutes to commit to this basic need.

Building/Grounds Maintenance

Occasionally we may need assistance with carpentry, painting and other miscellaneous fix-it projects. Also, in an effort to beautify our location and create a more adoptable environment, landscaping and grounds work are occasional areas of need as well.

Community Outreach and Humane Education

Show & Tail school program (Not Available to Teams) Take your dog into the classroom and teach children the basics of animal safety and responsible pet guardianship. Must be available during the week and possibly some weekends, depending on requests and own a dog with a tolerance for large groups of small children. If you do not own an appropriate dog we will provide a puppy for you to take to the classroom.

Dog Training Class Assistance

Volunteers who can clock in through Volgistics are eligible to assist with training classes including Puppy Manners, Basic Manners and Reactive Rover. They also may be asked to help with in-shelter private training. All training assistants must have dog handling abilities and access to dog condos to utilize shelter dogs for Reactive Rover both group class and private.
In addition, volunteers who assist with classes can bring their own dog to one class series per year free of charge or “gift” a complimentary class to a family member. ALL volunteers, not just class assistants, get 50% off group classes and private training, depending on availability of space, once they have logged 120 hours in Volgistics.

Ringworm Treatment Team

Our small but dedicated Volunteer Ringworm Treatment Team treats animals at the shelter with a spray dip twice a week, and is seeking more volunteers to join this team. This opportunity usually occurs on Wednesdays or Thursdays, and Saturdays or Sundays. The whole process usually takes 1-2 hours.

The name is misleading, but ringworm is not a worm at all. It is a mold-like fungal skin infection, like athlete's foot. It is contagious and a shelter animal with ringworm puts other shelter animals at risk of contracting the infection, but our treatment team takes precatuions to prevent the spread, and to prevent contracting it themselves. We provide gowns, gloves and booties to protect volunteers who help us prevent the spread of this contagious infection.

By agreeing to commit one to two hours a week, you will help save lives. Between the treatment team and a group of dedicated foster families who open their homes to animals with ringworm during treatment, we have saved many lives helping hundreds of homeless animals recover from ringworm and find their forever homes.
