Dog Training Classes

Louisiana SPCA trainers will teach you the methods most fully supported by the science of dog behavior and training to help you and your dog live harmoniously together. Please be aware that proof of age appropriate vaccinations (Rabies and DHPP) are required prior to the first class.

Puppy Preschool

Cost: $115

Class Size: Maximum 10 puppies

Location: Louisiana SPCA Resource Room 

Duration:  5 week session at LA/SPCA 

Summary: Get your puppy started on impulse control, address and prevent behavior problems, and provide important time sensitive experiences that will set your puppy up to be well-socialized for life!  Enrollment includes free access to all puppy socials held between your first and last class.

Puppies must be 17 weeks or younger at the start of their first class, and have received their first 2 rounds of DHPP vaccinations administered by a licensed Veterinarian. Puppies adopted from a shelter must be in the home for 2 weeks before they may attend a class.    Please register below.  

Class Start Dates: 

  • January 6, 2019 at 9 a.m. (5 week course on Sundays)
  • January 23, 2019 at 7 p.m. (5 week course on Wednesdays)

Basic Manners

Cost: $115

Class Size: 5-8 students

Locations: Louisiana SPCA, Jefferson Feed

Duration: 5-week session

Summary: Dogs must be friendly to other dogs and people and non-reactive.  This class covers all the foundation behaviors that support a harmonious relationship between you and your dog, including sit, down, stay, come, leave-it and focus. You will learn how to communicate with your dog via reward-based methods that are fun for all learners -- dog and human alike!

Class Start Dates:

  • October 27 at 9 a.m. (5 week course on Saturdays)
  • November 11 at 10:30 a.m. (5 week course on Sundays)
  • November 13 at 6 p.m. (5 week course on Tuesdays)

Manners Plus

Cost: $85

Class Size: 6 students

Locations: Jefferson Feed

Duration: 5-week session

Summary: Graduates of Basic Manners can take their schooling to the next level with advanced obedience behaviors. Emphasis will be on distance cues, stay and come when called around greater distraction as well as polite behavior walking on leash.

Class Start Dates:

  • September 15 at 10:30 a.m. (5 week course on Saturdays)
  • October 27 at 10:30 a.m. (5 week course on Saturdays)

Reactive Rover

Cost: $225

Class Size: 4 students

Location: Louisiana SPCA

Duration: 5-week course plus one humans-only intro session

Summary: 

Does your dog bark and lunge at other dogs while on-leash? Frustrated? Embarrassed? Feel like giving up? Learn how to manage your dog's behavior and help him associate other dogs with good things! This class is a controlled environment limited to four dogs and owners willing to invest the serious time and energy to effectively change their dogs’ behavior. We will give you the tools you need to decrease stress for both you and your dog. The training methods employed are 100% force-free and dog-friendly, and Students are expected to make time for daily practice between classes.

*Dogs with human-directed fear or aggression are not appropriate for this class*

Cancellation Policy

It is the responsibility of each student to be on time and present for each class. Make up classes are not available for missed classes; however, an abbreviated private lesson may be available at a reduced cost. Please contact us for details at training@la-spca.org.

We will allow a student to transfer to a different class one time in the same calendar year. Requests for transfer must be received at minimum 72 hours before the start of the first class of the registered session.
