Group Dog Training Classes

Louisiana SPCA trainers will teach you the methods most fully supported by the science of dog behavior and training to help you and your dog live harmoniously together. Please be aware that proof of age appropriate vaccinations (Rabies and DHPP) are required prior to the first class.

Puppy Manners

Cost: $115

Class Size: Maximum 10 puppies

Location: Louisiana SPCA Resource Room (new building), Jefferson Feed

Duration:  5 week session at LA/SPCA or Jefferson Feed

Summary: Get your puppy started on impulse control, address and prevent behavior problems, and provide important time sensitive experiences that will set your puppy up to be well-socialized for life!  Enrollment includes free access to all puppy socials held between your first and last class.

Puppies must be less than 18 weeks or younger at the start of their first class, and received their first 2 rounds of DHPP vaccinations administered by a licensed Veterinarian. Puppies adopted from a shelter must be in the home for 2 weeks before they may attend a class.  Addtionally, puppies registered for our Jefferson Feed class must have their Rabies vaccination.  Please register below.

Puppy Socials

Cost: $10

Class Size: Maximum 10 puppies

Location: Louisiana SPCA Resource Room (new building)

Duration: 1 social, 45 minutes

Summary: Bring your puppy to the party!  This is the time to introduce your puppy off-leash to new people and puppies of all breeds and personalities.  A professional dog trainer and experienced assistants will be on hand to monitor and modify play skills.  Toys, treats, and some low-impact agility equipment may be introduced to add to the educational fun.  Puppy Socials will be a great opportunity to ask questions regarding training and behavior.  All puppies under 16 weeks old with proof of 2 rounds of DHPP vaccinations will be allowed to participate (please bring proof with you to each social).  Registration required.  View class dates and register below.

Manners I - Large Group

Cost: $85

Class Size: 8-10 students

Locations: Jefferson Feed

Duration: 5-week session

Summary: Large Group classes have a higher student/instructor ratio for a lower class fee.  This class is more suitable for dogs who are not easily distracted or handlers that have some training experience.  Dogs must be friendly to other dogs and people and non-reactive.  This class covers all the foundation behaviors that support a harmonious relationship between you and your dog, including sit, down, stay, come, leave-it and focus. You will learn how to communicate with your dog via methods that are fun for all learners -- dog and human alike!  2017 Large Group classes will be held on Wednesday evenings at Jefferson Feed Pet and Garden Center.

Manners I - Small Group

Cost: $115

Class Size: 3-6 students

Locations: Louisiana SPCA, Jefferson Feed

Duration: 5-week session

Summary: Small Group classes have a lower student/instructor ratio for more one-on-one instruction.  This class is more suitable for dogs who are easily distracted or handlers who are new to training.  Dogs must be friendly to other dogs and people and non-reactive.  This class covers all the foundation behaviors that support a harmonious relationship between you and your dog, including sit, down, stay, come, leave-it and focus. You will learn how to communicate with your dog via reward-based methods that are fun for all learners -- dog and human alike!  Starting in 2017, Small Group students may also take advantage of discounts on in-home private training during the course of their class.  Please ask your instructor for additional details.

Summary: Manners II is the next step in your dog's training. Learn how to strengthen the skills you learned in Puppy or Manners I and how to get those behaviors in different environments. This class is a must for those who want well-rounded dogs that respond to training despite different distractions.

Prerequisite: Completion of Manners I with the Louisiana SPCA

Polite Pooch

Cost: $85

Class Size: 8 students

Location: Jefferson Feed, Louisiana SPCA

Duration: 5-week session

Summary: Does your dog need a brush-up on his manners in home and out?  This class addresses loose leash walking, polite greeting of people, and creating a rock-solid come when called.  Dogs must be friendly to people and other dogs to enroll in this class.

Prerequisite: Completion of Puppy Manners, Manners I, or equivalent

Fun with Fido

Cost: $85

Class Size: 8 students

Location: Jefferson Feed

Duration: 5-week session

Summary: The class is all about having fun with your dog through training and games!  Learn tricks such as spin, bow, and crawl, test your dog's skills on our agility equipment, and dabble in some nosework and brain games.  Fun for dogs of all ages!  Dogs must be friendly to other dogs and people and previously completed a group training class.

Prequisite: Completion of Puppy Manners, Manners I, or equivalent

Reactive Rover

Cost: $225

Class Size: 4 students

Location: Louisiana SPCA

Duration: 5-week session with video orientation and one in-shelter private lesson

Upcoming Start Dates and Times: Class dates can be found HERE.  If you are unsure if your dog qualifies, please submit a questionnaire before registering.  Please note that this class typically fills 1-2 months out.

Summary: Does your dog bark and lunge at other dogs while on-leash? Frustrated? Embarrassed? Feel like giving up? Learn how to manage your dog's behavior, identify his triggers and help him associate other dogs with good things! This class is a controlled environment that will give you the tools you need to decrease stress for both you and your dog. The training methods employed are 100% force-free and dog-friendly.

Before registering, please download and fill out the Reactive Rover Questionnaire and email to training@la-spca.org.  A trainer will be in touch after the form is received.  The class dates listed below are the full list of classes for 2017.

Reactive Rover Plus

Cost: $175 (class add-on, must be booked before class graduation)

Summary: Enhance your Reactive Rover training with Reactive Rover Plus!  This class add-on includes registration for three (3) Out and About sessions and two (2) one-on-one private sessions with your trainer (all to be used within 6 months of graduation).  Your trainer may recommend substituting an additional private session for the group outings.  Discount on services only applies if purchased before your Reactive Rover graduation ($325 value).

Reactive Rover - Out and About

Cost: $25

Class Size: 6 students

Location: TBD. We will resume in the fall. Instructor will announce location prior to each session

Duration: 1 class

Summary: Ready to take the exercises from Reactive Rover into the real world?  Need to brush up on basics in a controlled and fun environment?  Graduate of RR are invited to join a few of their classmates in public locations around the city where we will practice simple agility, nose work, and conditioning activities while we burn off excess energy.  Learn how walks don't have to be just about getting from point A to point B - it's the quality of the activity, not the distance that matters.
