Every pet is different, but every pet is exceptional and exceptional pets deserve exceptional owners.

Surrendering a Pet

Monday - Friday: 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Saturday - Sunday: 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.

The decision to surrender your pet to the Louisiana SPCA is surely a very difficult one to make, and it's important to have all the facts before moving forward. If you're considering surrendering your pet due to financial hardship, behavior issues, or because you plan to move, take a look at our Resources For Pet Owners page to learn about programs like our Food Pantry and behavior resources.

We always encourage people who need to give up their pet to first try responsibly rehoming him or her. It's usually best to start with family and friends, but through proper screening it can be safe and secure to transfer your pet to a stranger. By rehoming your animal yourself you can avoid putting your pet through the stressful process of entering an animal shelter.

Pet Surrender Steps

If you feel you've exhausted your resources and must surrender your pet to the Louisiana SPCA, here are a few things to know.

  • We only accept surrendered animals by appointment. Call 504.368.5191 ext 209 to schedule an appointment to surrender your pet.

  • You will be asked to complete two owner surrender forms. The first is the Owner Surrender Intake Form. Once signed, will legally transfer ownership of your pet to the Louisiana SPCA. The second is the Owner Surrender Form. This form asks specific questions about your pet's history, behavior, and the reason for your surrender. Please fill this form out to the best of your ability. You're more than welcome to provide additional information about your pet that is not asked.

  • Bring with you all veterinary records, registration papers and any medications your pet is taking.

  • Your appointment will take 30 - 45 minutes and will include a health exam and a behavior evaluation of your pet. Placement onto our adoption floor will be based on a variety of factors of which are the results of the exam and evaluation. After all information has been gathered and the animal's evaluation is complete, we will then discuss your options with you, so you can make the best decision for your pet.

  • A Client Care Counselor will remind you that the Louisiana SPCA is an open admission shelter, and as such we cannot guarantee that any particular animal will be placed up for adoption, in which case your pet could be euthanized. These decisions are based on health, behavior and space constraints. Our Client Care Counselors cannot guarantee the outcome of any animal.

  • There is a fee for surrendering your pet. For Orleans Parish residents the fee is $20 for each animal. For non-Orleans Parish residents, we strongly encourage you to take your pet to your parish shelter. The Louisiana SPCA is the official animal shelter for Orleans Parish and is not funded to handle pets from other Parishes. As an open admission shelter, you will not be turned away if you would prefer to surrender your pet to the Louisiana SPCA. For out of parish owner surrenders, the fee is $30 for each animal. Additional owner surrender fees may apply and depend on each situation. Please be aware that the owner surrender fees are in place to help us care for your pet once it's left in our care (vaccinations, tested for various diseases, flea prevention, food, care, etc.).
