The decision to surrender your pet to the Louisiana SPCA is surely a very difficult one to make, and it's important to have all the facts before moving forward. Our goal, if possible, is to keep pets in homes! If you're considering surrendering your pet due to financial hardship, behavior issues, or because you plan to move, take a look at our Resources For Pet Owners page to learn about programs like our Food Pantry, our re-homing partnership with, and behavior resources.

Surrendering Your Pet

If you feel you've exhausted your resources and must surrender your pet to the Louisiana SPCA, here are a few things to know.

  • To surrender your pet to our New Orleans Campus, please call 504.368.5191 to make an owner surrender appointment. We do accept walk-ins but highly encourage appointments. To surrender your pet to our Plaquemines Campus, please bring your pet during normal business hours; no appointment is required.

  • Bring with you all veterinary records, registration papers and any medications your pet is taking.

  • The owner surrender process normally takes between take 30 - 45 minutes.

  • You will be asked to complete three owner surrender forms. The first legally transfers ownership of your pet to the Louisiana SPCA. The second asks specific questions about your pet's history, behavior, and the reason for your surrender to help us identify the best placement option for them. The third is a consent form for us to contact you in the event that your pet is not suitable for adoptions. If this happens, you will be given the option to come re-claim your pet.
