dog Training Workshops

These workshops provide in-depth information about specific dog behavior problems and prevention training. Other than the Socials, workshops are for human attendees only. All workshop are held indoors and presented by our Training and Behavior Department.  All workshop proceeds benefit the animals at the Louisiana SPCA.

Puppy Socials
Intro to Dog Training

Puppy Socials

Cost: $10

Class Size: Maximum 10 puppies

Location: Louisiana SPCA Resource Room (new building)

Duration: 1 social, 45 minutes

Summary: Bring your puppy to the party!  This is the time to introduce your puppy off-leash to new people and puppies of all breeds and personalities.  A professional dog trainer and experienced assistants will be on hand to monitor and modify play skills.  Toys, treats, and some low-impact agility equipment may be introduced to add to the educational fun.  Puppy Socials will be a great opportunity to ask questions regarding training and behavior.  All puppies under 18 weeks old with proof of 2 rounds of DHPP vaccinations will be allowed to participate (please bring proof with you to each social).  Registration required.  View class dates and register below.



Dogs and Babies

Cost: $25 per couple

Location:  Metairie Small Animal Hospital

Duration: 1.5 hour workshop

Sunday, March 25th, at 10 a.m.

Summary: Dogs and Babies is a training class that is great for those that are expecting! This humans only workshop will give you the tools you need to help ensure a smooth transition for your entire family.

Some topics covered include:

  • Crate training
  • Teaching your dog to settle
  • Helping your dog disengage from the baby
  • Getting your dog used to the new routine
  • Acclimating your dog to all the new sights, sounds, smells and props that come along with the baby
  • Expectations for dog-baby interactions
  • So much more!.



Intro to Dog Training

Cost: $10

Location: Metairie Small Animal Hospital

Duration: 1 hour

2017 Workshop Dates and Times:  **Humans only** These workshops will start and end on time, so please arrive about 15 minutes early.


No Dates for 2017 remaining. New location and dates for 2018 coming in January.


Summary:  This training workshop is open to new adopters, seasoned pet owners, and anyone looking to learn a little more about how to effectively communicate with their dog.  This workshop covers the basics of how dogs learn and how you can make the most of their training.  As an added benefit, anyone who attends this workshop will receive a discount code for 10% off a Manners training class.  



Reactive Rover

Cost: $25 per person (free for Reactive Rover class registrants)

Location:  Louisiana SPCA

Duration: 1.5 hour workshop

2017-18 Workshop Dates and Times: **Humans only!** Space is limited, so register early! 

Wednesday, December 20th at 6:30pm

Wednesday, January 31st at 6:30pm


Summary: Does your dog bark and lunge at other dogs while on-leash? Frustrated? Embarrassed? Feel like giving up? This workshop will lay out the genetic and environmental underpinnings of dog-dog reactivity, discuss the underlying causation, and provide protocols for modifying the behavior.

You will also learn:

  • How to assess dog reactivity
  • How to determine which techniques are most effective for the particular dog you are working with
  • What drives dog-dog reactivity
  • How to identify a dog’s triggers
  • How to read dog body language
  • Best practices for addressing and modifying reactivity

The Reactive Rover workshop is required for those attending Reactive Rover class with their dog. This is our intro session, but anyone interested in learning more about training and behavior is welcome to attend.
