Volunteer Program Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a Louisiana SPCA volunteer?

The first step in becoming a Louisiana SPCA volunteer is to register! After attending orientation, you will have the opportunity to register for additional training based on the volunteer opportunities you are interested in. There is $40 fee for orientation which covers the cost of your volunteer supplies (apron, name tag, safety whistle and training).

Is it possible for me to volunteer with the Louisiana SPCA without attending the Volunteer Orientation?

All volunteers are required to attend orientation. Orientation and training will not only provide an understanding of our mission as well as a description of the numerous volunteer positions available, but it will also provide invaluable and necessary information on animal communication & behavior, animal handling methods and shelter protocols.

What sort of volunteer opportunities does the Louisiana SPCA offer?

There is always something to do at the Louisiana SPCA! These opportunities will be shared with you in-depth during orientation but a few of our volunteer favorites include adoption assistants, photographers, greeters, event help and more.

May I perform service hours for my school at the Louisiana SPCA?

We do accept school service hour requests at this time. To fulfill the service hours an individual will need to sign up for our volunteer orientation and meet the following age requirements:

  • be 18-years-old to volunteer without an adult
  • ages 16 and 17 must have parent/guardian consent
  • ages 12 to 15 must have parent/guardian consent and be accompanied by a parent/guardian while volunteering

Does the Louisiana SPCA provide group volunteer opportunities?

While most of our volunteer opportunities are ideal for individual volunteers, we do accept large groups of volunteers for service days! The ideal group size is no more than 10-15 people for 2 hours. All group members under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Sample projects for group volunteers include landscaping, prepping toys for our enrichment program, event assistance and administrative and animal care support. Rest assured that your group will have dedicated time to play with our adoptable animals!

Please note there is a minimum $100 donation request for all volunteer groups. Please email info@laspca.org to sign up to volunteer as a group.

I need to fulfill court ordered community service hours.  May I perform these hours at the Louisiana SPCA?

If you are interested in completing court-ordered community service hours with us please call 504.368.5191.

In Louisiana, our pets are a part of our culture as much as anything else. And for more than 130 years, the Louisiana SPCA has been an advocate for all our furry friends across the state. Follow our Lead and show the characters of Louisiana you care by supporting the Louisiana SPCA.

The Louisiana SPCA helped more than 3,000 animals find their forever home in 2020.

Did you know that we’re not affiliated with the ASPCA and rely on local donations?
