Have Fun

Make a difference in the lives of animals in our community by getting involved in our programs and events.

Thank you so much for considering to volunteer for the Louisiana SPCA! Our work would not be possible without the dedication, passion and determination each and every volunteer brings to our organization. Volunteers are integral to our day-to-day operations and the overall success of the programs and services we offer. We know you'll make a great addition to our incredible volunteer team and look forward to seeing you!

How to become a volunteer

  • Attend a volunteer orientation to learn more about the Volunteer Program and the opportunities available. You will also learn about the additional training requirements involved in becoming an Animal Care Volunteer. Pre-registration is required and you can register online here. You will be asked to complete a volunteer application based on your age. Please make sure to complete this application so that there is no delay with your orientation!

  • Commit to a minimum of 4 hours of volunteer work per quarter. Animal care volunteers must commit to a minimum of 4 hours of volunteer work per month.

  • If you are under the age of 18:

    • 16 - 17 years old: You are permitted to volunteer with parental or guardian permission, as designated by a permission waiver. Youth volunteers who are 16 or 17 must adhere to a "Buddy System" - these volunteers will only be permitted to interact with adoptable dogs and cats if they are with another person, either another 16-17 year old or an adult.

    • 12 - 15 years old: You are required to volunteer as a team with a parent or adult guardian (18 years or older). Volunteers under the age of 16 are not eligible to be trained as Animal Care Volunteers. Both team members must complete each step of the volunteer process above and must always volunteer together at any of our events. A waiver must be signed by your parent or guardian allowing you to volunteer with supervision.

    • For additional information on how your son or daughter (under age 18) can become involved please visit our Youth Education page.

  • There is a non-refundable $35 registration fee for new volunteers, which includes your own leash, apron, volunteer t-shirt, nametag, safety whistle, and training on proper animal handling protocols. This also includes a tour of the facility, and hands-on time with our adoptable animals.

**Please note that it can often take from 1-2 months to complete the process for becoming a volunteer.

Volunteering for Service Hours

We are happy to provide opportunities for students needing service hours.

Young students passionate about animal welfare can join our Animal Advocates program, designed for self-starters to develop their own fundraiser or campaign, or for DIY-ers to make treats and toys for shelter animals. You can contact our Youth Programs department for more information on receiving service hour credit through Animal Advocates.

Students who want a more hands-on service opportunity at the shelter can attend volunteer orientation and volunteer at the Louisiana SPCA. Students seeking service hour opportunities must adhere to the same volunteer requirements as listed above. Due to the level of training involved in volunteering at the Louisiana SPCA, students will not receive credit for their service hours until they have served 3 consecutive months as an active Louisiana SPCA volunteers contributing at least 4 volunteer hours per month. Once these requirements are met, we will provide a service letter for your school or organization.
